About Us

Bwindi Gorilla Batwa Empowerment Foundation is a non-profit community based organisation, established on cultural foundation that aims at improving the rights and wellbeing of the indigenous, marginalised Batwa people. It focuses on all Batwa who live in communities adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park who were forcefully evicted when Bwindi was gazetted as a national park for the conservation of mountain gorillas without compensation.

    To empower the Batwa people with in communities adjacent to Bwindi impenetrable national park with necessary skills, advocate for better health, ensure quality education, capacity building in order to enhance their social, economic and environmental wellbeing in their communities.

Goals & Objectives

  1. To support all Batwa who live in communities adjacent to BINP with skills like craft making and craft selling, recycling of waste materials which are used to make bangles, blacelets, aprons, basket weaving, tailoring and music dance and drama.
  2. To fight poverty and encourage resilience among Batwa people through encouraging them on saving culture and formation of saving groups that can generate income for them.
  3. To advocate and create awareness on the fundamental human rights to health and education of the vulnerable marginalised Batwa.
  4. To train the Batwa people on new and better methods of farming like vegetable growing, animal rearing, poultry keeping, tree planting which will generate income to them hence being able to take care of their families
  5. To transform the status of Batwa people in the communities so that they can also be regarded as people. This shall be done through fighting for their rights and speak for them in all intergrated and self sustaining poverty alleviation programmes.
